QR Codes

QR Codes or Quick Response Codes is something I recall seeing but I never fully understood what they were until now. I have done some investigating and come up with some information about QR codes.

These codes were invented in Japan over a decade ago and are progressing in the United States. The name is supposed to insinuate quickness from a scan of the code to a cell phone device. The purpose of the code is for information from various forms of media to link to your cellular phone. These codes may be seen on a web page, billboard, train station, mall, clothing, magazine, mailing, and many other places and will link to a website in order to receive more information. For example a QR code may show you a URL in order to view a coupon or deal for a travel destination. The usefulness appears to be storing more information than an actual bar codes- for example, more data, links, Geo coordinates, text etc. The cell phone scan of these bar codes avoids actually scanning with a larger hand held scanner.

Cell phones need to have the reader application in order to read this QR codes. The i Phone, Android and other Smartphones would have a reader that needs to be installed in order for this function to work.

Some of the strengths of QR codes seems to be the size of information that can be stored which is much more than a standard bar code. QR Codes help to connect people to digital content on the web which can lead to increased business from consumers.

Microsoft has created a similar 2D code called MS tags. These tags that Microsoft created can only be seen by the Microsoft tag reader unlike QR codes which can be viewed by multiple readers.

I am wondering what your thoughts and experience are with QR codes or MS Tags!

Please check out this link below and an article that claims QR Codes are not the future for advertising.
